Meetup @ Microsoft > Building STC NY Metro Satellite Communities
Recognizing how difficult it can be for members outside of New York City to come into Manhattan for meetings and networking, STC NY Metro is implementing a brand new concept - STC NY Metro satellite communities.

Thanks to a partnership with the local Community Development Specialist at Microsoft Stores throughout the metropolitan area, STC NY Metro members will be able to enjoy in-person networking while attending a webinar - all from the convenience of a Microsoft Store location near you.

Stay tuned for upcoming announcements.

Why go to Awards Dinner on May 5?

It's still one of the toughest TechComm awards to get: If it was so easy, we would all have the STC TechComm Competition awards on our resume.  "STC TechComm Competition awardee" is one of the most coveted and hardest awards for companies and individuals to receive.  This year, only 53% received awards compared to 69% in 2017 and 66% in 2016.
  • The Best of Show and Distinguished award is going to Information Builders, headquartered in NY. Other awardees from New York and Philadelphia are: CA Technologies, Medidata, Draeger and Siemens.  Awardees 2017-18.    Let's show them our support!
  • Our Awards Dinner on May 5 is a Mediterranean feast at Sahara Restaurant165 Easton Avenue, New Brunswick, NJ 08901 from 5:30-9:00 PM.
  • Come join us in our celebration!  Reserve and Pay here.  It's BYOB!  Bring a bottle or 2 to share.
  • Let's also thank our phenomenal Judges and volunteers!  It's a chance to reunite with old friends from other chapters, and make new friends!

The race is on — help us win the 2015 member race!

By Barbara Jungwirth, STC NY Metro Membership Chairperson

Why help us?

  • The colleague you recruit for STC — or the lapsed STC member who renews — receives a free membership in the STC NY Metro chapter.
  • STCNY Metro can offer its members more tools and events — more members means more resources.
  • You and your colleague can win prizes — but our chapter must first win the race.
  • Helping is just plain nice.
IndyCar photo by Ed Marsh

How does it work?

  1. You talk to your colleagues about the benefits of joining STC, or renew your lapsed membership.
  2. They apply for membership in STC and list STCNY Metro as the referring chapter.
  3. STCNY Metro wins STC's 2015 new and renewal member race and receives prizes.
  4. We raffle the prizes off to chapter members.
  5. You win the raffle.

What's your role in this?

  1. Use the recruitment materials below to talk to your colleagues.
  2. We have a very limited number of printed mini-brochures about the benefits of STC membership. E-mail us, if you'd like one.
  3. If we win this race, we'll raffle off the prizes to current members — if you help us win the race, you can win, too.

How long does the race last?

The contest ends on June 1, so start your engines!

Is there anything else you need to support your recruitment effort? Let us know!

As my term as chapter president is coming to a close, here are some reflections on the past and a message for the future...

In the past 2 years it has been my pleasure to work with a group of really caring and dedicated people in the board and the chapter's lay leadership:

  • We organized monthly programs and social events for the members and friends of the chapter (that's one or two events each month for 10 months!!)
  • We have revamped and re-branded the chapter web site with new look and fresh content (have you checked our Members Blog recently?)
  • Our newsletter has also been re-branded and has actually won a 2013 Apex award
  • We have opened new social venues like facebook and Meetup and have greatly increased our outreach
  • We have reached out and established links with area universities, to encourage and support students of technical communication, and have collaborated on a number of projects with them.
Indeed, STC has recognized our chapter as a Community of Excellence in 2013 and 2014, and some of our initiatives has won us the PaceSetter award as well in both 2013 and 2014.  At the summit this past May, we have additionally been recognized as ‘Most Improved Community as well!!

It has been an honor to serve this community, and I thank you all for your continuous support and participation. I hope to continue and serve the chapter and support the incoming president and board. Congratulation to Julie Waxgiser and the incoming team!! I know how dedicated and experienced they are, and I’m confident they will lead the chapter onward and upward!!
